Hepatitis B is caused by a virus knows as “Hepatitis B virus” or “HBV”. If a person’s blood is infected with HBV, it releases a protein called “The hepatitis B e-antigen or HBeAg” which spreads in the blood and is measured to diagnose or expose active hepatitis B infection.

Reference Values

HBV test can tell you if you have an active infection or not. It can only tell you whether HbeAg is present or not. If it is present in the blood it is termed as HBeAg positive and when absent, HbeAg negative.

Interpretations

If HBeAg is detectable in a blood sample, it indicates that the virus is active in the liver (and can be transmitted to others through blood transfusion, sharing personal equipments or unprotected sexual intercourse). If HBeAg is negative or not detected in the blood, you go for another testing for “anti-HBe” is positive (discussed under) this generally means that the virus is inactive.
